Are You Thankful?

Mom came out yesterday with her newest painting! This one, is her very first done with acrylics on canvas (she’s always painted with watercolors on watercolor paper). I’m always so proud of her art…I was grown and had children of my own before she unveiled this talent!!

This has been a LONG week. There has been so much going on….I need more hours in my day! Of course, then I remember that the Lord had a plan when he gave me 24 hours, I really just need to learn to work within them to make the most of my time.

Yesterday, I’m thrilled to say, that I finished edging a new herb garden in my yard (it is *very* small…but functional!). So far, I’ve planted rosemary, lavender, thyme, basil, marigolds and to fill in the gaps, I also planted three pepper plants. I would like to add sage, lemon thyme (if I can find some), chives, cilantro, parsley, and maybe some chamomile(?). At some point, I would like to add mint back to my garden. It is such an aggressive plant, I actually ended up killing off the mint I had growing because it was taking over my yard! This time, we’re going to confine it to a pot!

Along those lines, I’m hoping (if it doesn’t rain) that Paul can spare a few minutes this afternoon to put together my first squares for my square foot garden. We’re starting very slowly around here. I’m not going to make it too big, just enough to let us begin to learn more about growing our own food. I’ll post pictures as soon as we get a start!

Prayer Requests

Paul is still working away at his business plan. I know he is very tired. He leaves for work at 5:30 every morning to return at 5, eat dinner, and work well into the night on our business. I can’t wait for the seeds that he is planting begin to root and grow. I know that his hard work is going to pay off.

My Mom’s back has really been giving her trouble lately.

The Berry family has a new foster child placed in their home…please pray for this transition.

The Fuchs family had a Dr. appointment with their son yesterday. Please pray for peace and wisdom in upcoming decisions that they will be making.

The Wadsworth family, no particular reason. I ran into Bonita at the Walmart a couple of days ago. It was so nice to see her and I would like to pray that they are doing well.

Today, I’m Thankful For

It looks like rain! My little plants would love nothing more than a cool shower today!

The new day and all the opportunities that come with it.

I think I’ve ordered the bulk of my school books for next year! Hurray! I still have a couple of things to get for my older children.

My new MOSTLY metal mailbox. I’m sorry to say, it was impossible for me to find one with no plastic…but this is better than the majority of the ones we have seen.

My sweet daughter, who volunteered to post in my absence last week. What would I do without her? I do have to note that we broke over 1,000 visitors last week! I hope that I can begin to add additional features to the site soon…but it’s going to have to get in line behind all the other things Paul has to do first!

Tracy’s Task

It’s time for haircuts in my home again! I’m going to work on all the children over the course of the day and Paul when he gets home.

*The other things that I need to finish are to straighten my home, begin to work on my lesson plan book for next year, cut out Matthew’s birthday quilt, water my yard (hopefully, it will rain), bake banana bread and prepare dinner.

Today’s Scripture Meditation

I belong to a digest that addressed the subject of being thankful recently. I was so touched by it….I know that it is important to let others know how thankful you are….

2 Tim 3:1-5

“But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, *ungrateful*, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God–having a form of godliness but denying its power.”

Oh my, I could go on and on with this one, but I think for today, it is important that we realize that God wants us to be thankful. It is a habit that we should work toward for ourselves, and to teach in our children.

Strawberries, Strawberries

Good afternoon!

My name is Courtney, I’m 14, and also the oldest of this bunch. My mom is feeling a bit under the weather today, so, I am filling in for her.

Today, we have gotten over 6 loads of laundry done….whoo hoo! The laundry line is such a lifesaver! I personally enjoy going out there to hang the laundry up so that I can enjoy God’s beautiful creation. What an artist!

We are preparing to put up four buckets of strawberries in the freezer and of course to eat some raw. I love strawberries and there’s nothing like them over biscuits or pancakes! Yum! We can’t seem to keep any in the house……………….JOSHUA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Who likes to steal 6 at a time!!) (He says he’s BORROWING!!!) We have pretty much finished now. They are about put away. The strawberry shortcake was wonderful!!!!

Today, being a Friday, we are cleaning up the house and preparing for the weekend….we still have a teensy wheensy way to go! : ) I am not really sure how the house gets messed up so fast! I got my zone, the kitchen, nice and tidy though! Yes! The zones and buddy systems are probably some of the best things we have instituted in the last couple of years. The zones are simple. Everybody is in charge of a room (Courtney: Kitchen, Joshua: Living room, Jacob: Bathrooms, Jessica: Laundry Room, Matthew: Halls, Timothy: Kitchen Set,etc.) so if Mom says “Clean your zones!” the house is instantaneously clean in about half an hour.

Our prayer requests:

My family. We have had almost $2,800 in car repairs since January. Also that our businesses will grow and prosper.

Mrs. Buetow sent this one:
“please pray for my aunt faye…her husband cecil’s body is shutting down………he has a 16 dd who doesn’t even know her birth mom……..”

My Scripture Meditation:

Ephesians 6 (New International Version)

Children and Parents
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

I have personally felt so blessed obeying my parents. It gives you a satisfactory feeling inside knowing that you haven’t done something they would not approve of. In fact, the Bible says that if you obey your parents, you will have a long life!!!!!!!How cool is that????!!

I need to go for now!

Courtney “Court” Lambert

Blooming Roses!

The Roses are in bloom at my home. This is the biggest reason that I love the Spring (I actually prefer fall and winter to the warmer months!). Joshua brought this one in to me as a surprise yesterday…it smells wonderful!!

I came across a funny for today that I received off of one of the sites that I belong to, I thought you might enjoy:

A mother was telling her little girl what her own childhood was like: “We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods.” The little girl was wide- eyed, taking this in. At last she said, “I sure wish I’d gotten to know you sooner!”

I’m trying to make sure that I make time to remember the fun things…it is these things that the children will remember through their lives!

Prayer Requests

I’m apparently still battling a little “bug”. I think that it’s lingering because I have been pushing myself so much lately. Today, my plan is to take it a little easier…we’ll see!

Emma is having a hard time with her little gums. I think we’ll be better once the next two top teeth are in.

The Shepherd family is on my mind this morning…no particular reason. Please pray that mom, Ruthanne, would have a great day!

Please pray that we can overcome a couple of financial obstacles this week.

Today, I’m Thankful For

The article that is in the local newspaper about us today. It’s just a paragraph, but it’s still good to be getting a little exposure.

Some great family time last night.

The things that I’ve gotten done this morning.

The break from most of the normal activities that our family is involved in (it’s just a week, but it sure is nice to not have to be anywhere!).

My husband getting to catch up on some much needed rest this week.

Tracy’s Task

Once you’ve created your master list, you need to start keeping an eye out for possible gifts to stock your gift closet. Holiday clearance sales are a great place to look for inexpensive gift items. This is of course, the best time to stock up on gift wrap and bags, tape, cards, bows and tags too. My favorite after holiday find are candles!

Don’t forget to check clearance isles, change of season sales in department stores, and dollar stores! You never know what you might find!

Some suggested items for a gift closet might include: Candles, craft kits or supplies, pens, art supplies, seasonal items to include: mugs, cookie plates, scarves, hats, seeds, ornaments, towel sets, stationery, journal, books, frames, office and school supplies, clearance baby items, cd’s, dvd’s, games, toys, bath supplies, baskets, and baking supplies.

What I’m Learning

I made homemade tortillas last night! The were so much better than the store bought ones. My only problem is that they didn’t stay together as well as the regular tortillas we use but everyone agreed they definitely tasted better. I found my recipe at http://www.allrecipes.com . If you’ve never visited this website…it is a ‘must see’ for anyone who cooks!

This morning I was thinking about how I want the Lord to change me and shape me in His will. I have such a desire to see Him in every part of what I do and who I am.

This is a poem that I thought I would share this morning:

Dear Lord change not Thy will in my life,
Or trial and sorrows to be;
Renew my faith and make me strong,
Change not Thy will, change me.

Though teardrops fall when trouble comes,
Like storms on a rolling sea;
Let Thy beacon guide my ship to port,
Change not the storm, change me.

When Thy Holy Word I don’t understand
And Thy glory I cannot see;
Teach my eyes, give me sight and wisdom,
Change not Thy Word, change me.

If the fruit Thou hast given me to eat,
Taste bitter and sour, I plea;
Let not my will but Thine be done,
Change not the fruit, change me.

If sometime I murmur and grumble, dear Lord,
About the cross I carry for Thee;
Keep it firm on my shoulders, but hold my hand,
Change not the cross, change me.

If You change Thy ways to please me, dear Lord,
I would soon grow cold and turn from Thee;
That You may hear my prayers, dear Lord,
Change not Thy ways, change me.

There’s a valley that I must cross,
Someday Thy face to see;
Lest I forget what power is Thine,
Change not the valley, change me.

Today’s Scripture Meditation

Ps 51:1-10
“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

Growing Up

Babies grow so quickly…I just don’t know where the time goes! Emma now has 3 teeth and just yesterday, started crawling across the floor then stopping to sit up. I almost wanted to cry. In so many ways, I wish that I could keep her little and then again, looking at my older children, I realize that I really like the people that they are becoming. I look forward to seeing each way they are growing every day. Courtney trying a new recipe or Joshua organizing his boy scout troop…things that were once just a hope for them are now becoming the practice. I’m so proud of them. I look forward to seeing who my precious Emma will some day be. Will she laugh at her Dad’s corny jokes? Will she enjoy helping decorate and rearrange the home? Will she too, treat a baby in the house (we hope God blesses us with many more!!) like they are the most special gift that could only have been sent from above?

Today I wanted to share a link to an article that was featured at LAF. Though I’m not going to argue whether the article is spiritually correct, I think that it should cause us to pause and think about those things in which we expose ourselves.

http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/pnoonan/?id=110008034

It is true, we live in a society where the norm is becoming to mention those things that should remain private. I see this more often myself when it pertains to mothers of large families. There are those who, in “fun” will mention very private parts of our lives, leaving us feeling like we have just been “exposed” to the world! I don’t know when it became O.K. to talk about these moms in this way, but I find it bizarre that it’s O.K. for a Mom who has 5 children but the same people would never think about speaking on such intimate topics about a Mom of 2 or 3. I think that if nothing else, this would “embarrass the angels” to no end.

Babies are a gift from God.

My husband always says that it is an evil world and one true way to know is that “good is evil and evil is good”. There are so many horrible things going on in our society…it is an evil world when rather than dealing with sin, we would choose, as a society, to turn our focus and our comments on moms.

The angels are blushing ladies! If you are a Mom to a large family, I applaud you…I *know* how much work goes into what you do on a daily basis…I know what it feels like when someone walks up and makes a comment not caring that your other children are listening or not caring that for that moment, they leave you feeling dirty and hurt. Remember that God has a plan for you…God has a plan for each and every precious child you have in your home. “The angels” know the eternal consequence of what you are doing daily in your home.

Prayer Requests

The Schultz family, this God fearing Dad of a large family passed yesterday after a struggle with cancer. Please pray for those he leaves.

My husband, that his day be productive.

Our home, the Lord is leading me to examine every area of our home to be sure that the things that I’m doing on a daily basis are those things that He would have me spend time on.

My dear friend Christy, she would have a great day!

My Grandmother, hurt her back…she is also supposed to be returning to the Dr. this week for a recheck on her foot and to evaluate whether or not she will need surgery for it to be reset.

Today, I’m Thankful For

Friends that God has sent to me.

The health of my children.

The weather being nice enough for the children to have a picnic over the weekend.

My son, Jacob(10), who woke up this morning at 5 when his Dad left and decided to bless my day by making my bed up for me! My children are so sweet!

A little squirrel that I’ve been watching in my yard playing this morning! They are so much fun to watch!

Tracy’s Task

Yesterday we worked on a gift closet. Today, you are going to start your master list for your holiday planner. Take time to think on and list all of the people that you normally buy gifts for throughout the year. Make a list of the potential gifts (including the homemade gift list you worked on a couple of days ago!). Write out names, ages, birthdays, anniversaries and don’t forget Christmas! You might also want to include things like thank you gifts, hostess gifts, cheer up gifts and gifts for teachers. This is also a good place to include notes about each person that might give you hints on gifts they might like…for instance, likes and dislikes, hobbies or decorating styles.

Tomorrow, we’re going to start discussing stocking a gift closet!

What I’m Learning

Just about any stain that you need to remove from clothing will come out if you soak them overnight in a solution of water and Biz all color bleach. I learned this from a lady in my area that owns a consignment store. She told me that she goes to our local thrift store each morning, purchases clothing that is marked down due to stains, soaks them overnight in Biz, and then launders them through a regular cycle to then re-sale in her store. IT works!

Today’s Scripture Meditation

1 Cor 14:20-21

“Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. In the Law it is written: “Through men of strange tongues and through the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me,” says the Lord.”
(NIV)

Covering Our Humanity

Warning! This is going to be a long post today….

I’m trying so hard to eat and take better care of myself. This morning finds me at the computer feeling sorry for myself after completing Pilates. Yes, I know that I will better person for this in the end but my tummy is burning! Seriously, after 8 sweet littles (1 C-section, which definitely did not help), my tummy muscles are in much need of strengthening.

You never really know at the beginning of a day exactly what surprises wait around the corner. Yesterday, we did the normal Sunday things and we had a couple of errands that needed to be done but I was so surprised and blessed to enjoy a visit from a good friend that I had not seen in quite some time. I felt like the Lord allowed this time…it was so nice to see her again. I love the little surprises that God allows for us to find here and there!

We usually stop in the afternoon for a small snack…something to just get everyone through to dinner. I wanted to share a snack recipe that I made for my family over the weekend…it was really good (not so healthy…but if you just eat a little….). : )

One thing that I try to do when I’m making a pie is mix up an extra one or two pie crusts for the freezer. These don’t look like those nice store bought ones. If you were to see them they just look like a crumbled mess inside the ziplock bag but I can take them out of the freezer, let them soften a little, and roll them into a great pie crust. They are still flaky and nice even after being frozen. Anyway, you will need one of those pie crusts!

If you would like to try, my pie crust recipe is as follows:

2 2/3c sifted regular flour
1t salt
1c shortening
6T cold water

Combine first 3 ingredients in large mixing bowl. Cut well with a pastry blender. Add ice-cold water. Cut with pastry blender. (Remember to always cut, never stir!) It’s at this point, you would want to go ahead and package any extra pie crusts for the freezer into ziplock freezer bags. Dampen a counter top with a damp dish cloth and lay waxed paper down. Roll out on floured surface, adding sifted flour as needed to keep from sticking. Carefully, slide hand under waxed paper. Invert pie plate over top of pie crust, center, and flip, position it and peel waxed paper carefully off. Trim edges and shape as desired. This recipe will yield 2 crusts. (The trimmed edges are great snacks! (We don’t waste anything around here!) rolled out, cut into strips, brushed with a little butter, sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar and baked until they are golden brown.)

To make the Cheese Tart (VERY EASY):

2 eggs
1c sharp cheddar cheese
2T salsa
1/2t salt
1/2t pepper
pastry for a single-crust pie (9 inches)

In a bowl, beat the eggs. Add the cheese, salsa and pepper; mix well. Roll out pasty into a 12 inch circle on a foil lined baking sheet. Spread with cheese mixture to within 1 inch of edge. Fold edge of pastry over outer edge of filling. Bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand for 5 minutes before cutting into wedges. Refrigerate any leftovers.

Prayer Requests

My day didn’t start off so good. –No, this was not because I had to exercise! : ) I need prayer that I will not let this effect the rest of the day.

My friend, Maribel who is on my mind this morning.

Mike, someone that we knew, that has struggled with bladder cancer. This weekend I’ve had a burden to pray for him. I’m not sure if it’s because of the cancer or not. Please just pray!

My friend, Tina, and some personal struggles she is having.

Today, I’m Thankful For

Brandi, someone who contacted me through another friend (thanks, Tanya). She lives pretty close to me and has just had a new little person to add to her big family! It’s always nice to meet other large families!

What I hope will be a bright and sunny day so that I can get lots of laundry caught up!

An early start to my day! Even Josh and Courtney were up exercising with me this morning!!!

My finger (some of you might remember this!) seems to be finally getting back to normal. I can actually take it the full range of motion now.

The newsletter, “Girls of Grace” that Courtney has been working on for awhile now. She felt that there was a lack of good materials for girls her age so she decided to start one. It’s inspiring even to me! I’m thankful that God has placed this ministry on her heart the way that He has.

Tracy’s Tasks

We’re going to break from the planner and take a few days to discuss a gift closet (this is really an integral part to your holiday planner as well…I’ll explain later)….

Are you thinking that you might not have enough room for a gift closet? You don’t really have to have an entire closet reserved for gifts. Mine actually stay organized into small rubber-maid totes in my master bedroom closet. I do have additional storage for my children’s gifts when we get close to the holidays but I’ll never tell where it is!! ;)

Some places that you might want to consider are the basement, attic or under a bed. I actually even have a little room under my sofa that would fit a small amount of storage. You could also just use a suit case, a tote bag, or baskets. You just need to provide enough room to keep your gifts safely out of sight but somewhere will you not forget about them!

Tomorrow, we will work on creating a master gift list. I’m working with you! Let me know if you have any questions or comments!

What I’m Learning:

Little boys (and big boys, alike) never seem to stop making me giggle. I left Josh (12) watching Emma (7 months) in the kitchen yesterday. As I walked through to put some things away, Josh announced how smart he thought she was. He said “Look, mom, I’ve trained her!”. He had basically taught her that when he said “give me your hand”, if she would put her hand up to his, he would give her a toy. It was amusing to watch his new accomplishment…he explained how he had done it and then said “wow, mom, she’s just like a PUPPY!!” I’m sure that as a young lady she’s going to love knowing that as a baby, she was puppy trained! Only a little boy would think of this!

Today’s Scripture Meditation

I wanted to share this devotion, written by Nancy Campbell. She publishes Above Rubies magazine and is such an encouragement to women worldwide.

COVERING OUR HUMANITY

Exodus 25:23-24, “You shall also make a table of acacia wood. and you shall overlay it with pure gold.”

The first mention of the table in the Bible is in the above passage where God tells Moses to make a table from acacia wood and then to overlay it with pure gold. In the Bible wood always speaks of humanity. The pure gold speaks of the divinity of Christ. It is interesting that this table was to be made of both wood and gold, speaking of Christ’s humanity and His divinity. However, I believe it also relates to the tables we have in our homes.

We come to our table, loaded with humanity. We come with our weaknesses and failings. Our children come to the table in their humanity. They are certainly not perfect. Sometimes they are fussy. Sometimes they don’t want to eat. They may grumble and complain. There may even be arguments. Without God’s intervention, it can be a total shambles! But God, represented by the table overlaid with pure gold, wants to come to your table.

He wants to bring His presence to your table. He wants to cover your humanity with His divinity. He wants to fellowship with you at your table. This is what He did at the beginning of creation with Adam and Eve, and He wants to continue this practice throughout all generations. (Genesis 3:8-9) Every day He came to talk with Adam and Eve. He did not come to them in the heat of the day or during their hours of work (for God established the principle of work before sin entered the Garden of Eden). He came to them in the cool of the day, in the evening time-the time of the day when we gather around the meal table to eat together, fellowship and relax.

God wants to join you at this time of each day too. Invite Him to come. Don’t hide from His presence as Adam and Eve did after they had sinned. Make sure that you are gathered together as a family to meet Him. I think that many times God comes to homes, waiting to join them as they sit at table together-but the table is empty! No meal is prepared, mother is preoccupied with other things or is still out in the car with the children, or the family is snacking in front of the TV!

The table of wood and pure gold that God told Moses to make was for the Holy Place in the tabernacle in the wilderness. Each week the priests would bake 12 loaves of bread which they would place on the table. These loaves were called the Bread of His Presence. At the end of the week the priests would eat the loaves together in the presence of the Lord. This also speaks of God delighting to fellowship with us at our table.

When you give thanks at the beginning of each meal, invite God to come with all His divinity to your table. Acknowledge His presence. His presence will bring the atmosphere of Heaven. It will cover your earthy humanity. I don’t think you can do without Him at your table. I can’t.

Love from NANCY CAMPBELL

PRAYER:

“Father, I ask that you will come to our table each ay. I thank you that your presence can change the atmosphere at our table. Lord, we need you. Amen.”

AFFIRMATION:

I prepare my table for the King of kings as well as my family!

I know that this has been such a long post today… I pray that you all have a great week and remember there is a greater purpose with every dish and every diaper. We are serving our King and laying a foundation that will live far beyond our years!

Do You Remember?

Who is this little fellow that was hanging out on our porch yesterday? Courtney saw him on her way from gathering clothes on our laundry line and couldn’t resist snapping a quick picture. Maybe we’ll do some bug study today? : )

We have loved our laundry line…I know, that this change in our lives is going to save us a ton of money. One of the online groups I belong to posted a clothesline poem that I wanted to share here. (I’m not sure of the author…if you know please pass it along so I can give proper credit!!)

The Clothesline

Do You Remember the Clothesline?

A clothesline was a news forecast
To neighbors passing by.
There were no secrets you could keep
When clothes were hung to dry.

It also was a friendly link,
For neighbors always knew
If company had stopped on by
To spend a night or two.

For then you’d see the fancy sheets
And towels upon the line;
You’d see the company tablecloths
With intricate design.

The line announced a baby’s birth
To folks who lived inside,
As brand new infant clothes were hung
So carefully with pride.

The ages of the children could
So readily be known
By watching how the sizes changed,
You’d know how much they’d grown.

It also told when illness struck,
As extra sheets were hung;
Then nightclothes, and a bathrobe, too,
Haphazardly were strung.

It said, “Gone on vacation now,”
When lines hung limp and bare
It told, “We’re back!” when full lines sagged,
With not an inch to spare,

But clotheslines now are of the past,
For dryers make work less,
Now what goes on inside a home
Is anybody’s guess.

I really miss that way of life.
It was a friendly sign,
When neighbors knew each other best,
By what hung on the line!

To update you, I purchased my first package of diapers in over a month, this week. Courtney and I tried to put a $ figure on how much we have saved (we also, as I’m sure most of you know, potty trained Ben). We think, that in a month’s time we have saved somewhere in the neighborhood of $50.00! That’s a huge savings! When I think of all the ways I would rather spend that money in a year other than something that will be used and thrown in the trash, I get really excited! I do need to make some more…at the moment I only have made 8. I also need to construct diaper doublers so Emmie will make it through the night with no leaking. (We’ve still been using the disposables when we go out, and at night…I do think that we’ll end up going totally cloth though, this has just been much easier of a transition than I would have ever thought it would be!)

I think I’m ready for the next step of the “de-cluttering myself” challenge through my MIH group. Today, (well actually a couple of days ago!) we were supposed to start a notebook on ourselves. We are supposed to include things like our body type, beginning weight, and color analysis. I haven’t done this yet so I’m going to work on it today. One of the things that I have done is for two days, I’ve been without COKE (which I adore and have given up before but it is always calling me back!). I have had tea at dinner and water at all other times. I can tell that I’m feeling better already!

Prayer Requests:

This morning finds me feeling a little better but I’m still not 100%, maybe not even 75%. Please pray for my continued recovery.

Paul has been hard at work. Please pray for his continued efficiency and that we would have some important phone calls returned today.

Kim Greenlaw is still having some health issues. She has a procedure scheduled for next Friday that will hopefully help her. Be praying for her recovery!

Today, I’m Thankful For:

My husband. He works so hard, and those of you who know him will agree, that he never complains.

The growing men in my home. (Have I shared what a blessing I think this is? They are so respectful of me, and pamper me…I know that they are growing up to lead families of their own. I feel an awesome responsibility of preparing them for this crucial mission, and yet I get this brief moment in time to love them and snuggle them. I wonder, if when they are taller than I am, and perhaps there is a young woman at their side and children streaming behind, if I’ll remember the quiet times that I’ve shared with each of them looking at every detail of their face and thinking how wonderfully blessed I am just to be their Mom?)

The cool weather this week… it has been so nice to feel cool breezes this week. I know it’s not going to last long but I’m thankful for this week!

A good night’s rest.

My daughter, Courtney. I’m thankful that she understands that making mistakes is part of learning and is therefore not afraid to try something new. She has been cooking so many new things, and sewing, and thinking of all sorts of room decorating ideas. She is one of the most creative people that I know!

Tracy’s Task:

Today is Friday. This is the day to think about spending special time with your hubby over the weekend. I’m going to try to find some time to make us a special dinner (this doesn’t have to be extravagant!), put the children in bed and sit and enjoy a date with my dear hubby!

Your Comments:

I get lots of comments and questions in my email box…today I thought I would share a few.

From Christy (my dear friend!…you didn’t know you were going to show up on the blog today did you????)

“Hey Tracy, I enjoy reading your blog so much—–it keeps me in tune with your life when we both get so busy…I visited the sites that you had in today’s blog and I *think* I am a winter …Just wish I were a thinner squash!! LOL”

O.K., Those of us who know Christy know she’s not fooling anyone!! She is a MUCH thinner fruit than she used to be. She has been such an inspiration to me!!!! I, by the way, THINK, I’m a Summer pear.

From Shannon

“Tracy, I belong to MIH also! That’s how I found your site. I love this post! I am so very proud of my Southern heritage.”

Me too, Shannon! I think that life just seems to move at a slower pace in the south! I love it here!

From Gail

“8 people in a trailer. I applaud you and God Bless You.”

Thanks Gail! We are actually 10 people (including Paul and I). It’s really not too bad …it requires me to stay constantly on top of de-cluttering in my home. I do have to say that we are in constant prayer that the Lord would provide a larger home for our family, but we try to make the most of what we have and for the most part, I think that we are doing better and better (unless you drop by unexpected, LOL!).

What I’m Learning:

My homemade dishwasher detergent is NOT working. We ended up with some nasty looking glasses. What I did like was using white vinegar in place of jet dry. It works great!

Today’s Scripture Meditation:

Paul and I have faced some real temptation in the area of debt lately. I wanted to share with you (more for myself) what the Bible says about debt. I’m going to just share one or two verses a day.

Rom 13:7-8
“Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.”
(NIV)

This verse talks about lending but only to a fellow believer and without interest.

Lev 25:35-37
“If one of your countrymen becomes poor and is unable to support himself among you, help him as you would an alien or a temporary resident, so he can continue to live among you. Do not take interest of any kind from him, but fear your God, so that your countryman may continue to live among you. You must not lend him money at interest or sell him food at a profit.”
(NIV)

Looking Your Best

I mentioned yesterday that the MIH group that I belong to has had a “de-cluttering yourself” mission going over the last week. We were asked to take a ‘before’ picture of ourselves. Reluctantly, this is mine. (It’s much easier to lurk in the shadows!) We were also told to investigate our body type and coloring so that we might know colors and styles that look the best on us. I thought I might pass along that website information…every woman should look her best.

To find out what body shape you are, visit:
http://www.yourlifemagazine.com/style.html

Are you a Fall, Winter, Spring or Summer? Visit:
http://www.ehow.com/how_3249_choose-colors-flatter.html

I’m still working on figuring one of these out! I know my body type, but as a child when I had my color analysis done I was told that I was a Summer with Spring hair! How confusing is that?! I’m going to go back and read through these so that I can get more of a clarification.

Prayer Requests:

I am STILL battling this bug that I’ve had. It’s more of an annoyance that anything else, but I’m ready to be done with it!

My Mom’s car is acting up. The garage that she takes it to has had a string of things they’ve repaired for her in the last few weeks…none of them permanent fixes. She is still having trouble with it going dead.

Paul would be able to find enough hours in his day to finish the things that he has pressing right now.

Today, I’m Thankful For:

My sunflowers that are now almost all as tall as my two year old!

The time that I’m going to find today, to finish my cloth napkins.

My children learning to make Chocolate Mousse in their Home-Ec coop last night…yum, yum, yum is all I can say!

The sound of my sweet little person sleeping in her crib at night. I love to hear her breathing. She is such a blessing and so special to me.

Spring rains that are supposed to fall today to water all of my growing, still unidentifiable little plants.

Tracy’s Task:

I’m not going to give you another holiday planner mission just yet. You need to organize what you have and be thinking about what is special to you about the holidays. It seems that sometimes we are so used to celebrating our holidays a particular way, we never stop to think about what actually makes them special. Doing this will allow you to cut out the “fluff”…all the things you do just because of tradition and celebrate just the parts that are special. You’ll find that de-cluttering, even this part of your life, will lend to a much less stressful holiday.

What I’m Learning:

I had a terrible headache last evening and decided to try one of those “HEAD ON” rollers. That thing is AWESOME!! It looks like a glue stick but it has a roller like roll on deodorant. You simply roll it across your head and within 10 minutes you start feeling a cool sensation, almost like someone has placed an ice pack on your head. It’s all natural…and it worked! Much faster than ordinary medicine would have! If you haven’t tried it yet, you should!

Today’s Scripture Meditation:

Ps 139:23-24
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
(NIV)

Puddle Jumpers

Does it ever seem that morning comes too early?? I did myself a favor last night (at my husband’s request) and unplugged the alarm clock I had mentioned a couple of posts back. We are finding it easier to set the alarm on our cell phones until we can make the trip to Walmart and purchase a plain alarm clock. At least I was able to get a full night’s sleep without the interruption of that alarm!

I have two main missions today.

The first is to finish the cloth napkins that I’ve been working on. As I mentioned a few days back, I purchased several really nice table cloths on clearance for $1.00. We’ve already cut them into squares, now we just have to hem the edges so they can be used. Jessica loves setting the table and folding napkins in all sorts of ways for dinner so she’s really excited to have the new napkins as am I, hopefully, saving us a few more dollars from our grocery bill each week.

The second mission is in response to another online group that I belong to. Our moderator gave us the challenge to lay down the sugary soft drinks (of which I do occasionally indulge!), and take time to do something for ourselves.

This has actually been something that I’ve been working on. It is hard when are you involved in so much that life throws at you to remember to take care of yourself. Specifically today, I’m going to drink water and remember to suck my tummy in and sit up straight. I do remember a time in my life when I did this automatically…ahhh the many years that have past since then.

Prayer Requests:

Kimberly Greenlaw called yesterday with two requests. One was for a little girl (I do not know her name, who although alive, is unresponsive following an accident around water which left her underwater for several minutes and the second for a little boy involved in a car accident (he was playing outside in his neighborhood and a teenager ran into him). He seems to be O.K. but has several injuries. Please pray for these two families.

That my sweet hubby can wrap up some loose ends we have today!….and that he’ll finish an upgrade project that he’s been spending quite a bit of time on.

My Grandmother. It seems that she took another little fall in the restroom while she was at the Dr.’s office. I had mentioned that she fell and broke her foot on Sunday. This time they think she may have a bone that has shifted due to the fall yesterday. They want to see her in two weeks and if this is indeed the case, she may be looking at surgery to put it back in place. Please pray that all will be well with her when she returns to her ortho in two weeks.

Today, I’m Thankful For:

Is it possible that I have actually successfully potty trained 7 children? OOOOHHHHH! I think that we may be turning a corner. Benjamin loves stickers and he’s been going over and over and over again just to get a new sticker. Jacob says that he reminds him of a water hose because he’s staying in the bathroom so much. (I know, I know, this is too much information but you would just have to know Jacob!)

I made a little more progress on my basket last night. This project takes many more vines than I had originally thought it would.

It seems that we may be becoming very good at getting up early ….something that we have struggled with for quite some time. It REALLY does make a huge difference in your day to get an early start.

My children, who are a never ending source of joy, love and encouragement.

The sweet letters that I receive from many of you in my email box during the day. Thank you for praying for me and for being such an encouragement to me.

Tracy’s Task:

We’re going to continue working on our holiday planners. Today, using one sheet of paper each for major holidays, begin to work on your menu. In most homes, there are items that you serve every year, list those first. List any recipes or ideas that you would like to try on the bottom of the page. Use the back to make a list of needed ingredients for each dish so that you can start to shop for sales.

I’m always excited to see this time of the year approaching because barbecue sauce and baked beans are on sale for very little. Because many grocery stores make these items “loss leaders” for their 4th of July sales, we go ahead and stock up for the year.

What I’m Learning:

Fun does not have to come with a big expense! Today’s picture is of my son, Timothy, playing with our “puddle jumpers”. This particular set was made by my oldest son Joshua when he was in his second year of cub scouting. It’s hard to believe that they have held up this long.

Timothy was so funny trying to walk with them. He would not be discouraged from learning to use them. He fell a couple of times but I was so proud to see him just climb back up and try again. It didn’t take him long to be taking steps across the yard!

Today’s Scripture Meditation:

1 Cor 3:8-11
“The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building. By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
(NIV)

Mom’s Soap Sack

This is the soap sack that I made for my Mom for Mother’s Day. I thought this was one of the most nifty ideas…it’s a drawstring bag perfect for little slivers of soap. You can actually lather through it and the drawstring is long enough to hang over the shower head! My Mom loved it!

I’m grateful to Darlene who runs Heartlight Knitalongs on Yahoo Groups for giving me permission to print her pattern here.

Today, I’m just going to print the actual knitting instructions but if you choose to knit the soap sack, you will need to join the group to get the sewing instructions or email me and I can send them to you! I would like to see a picture of your finished sack! You might even get a guest pic in the blog!! : )

Now, if in case you don’t know what all these little symbols mean…knitting is definitely a skill that you want to learn. It is so much fun and the items that you can create are both beautiful and functional! Give it a try!

On to other things….I woke up yesterday just knowing that this was going to be a great week for us. My children asked why I felt this way and I told them that I just had a feeling. I even went so far as to list a few things that would be happening. “Daddy’s business is going to pick way up, we’re going to try some new things, and someone is even going to get a letter from their pen pal!” ….we’ve been waiting for awhile for a return letter. Wouldn’t you know it! Yesterday was awesome! Paul had a wonderful day, I tried something new (I’ll explain in just a minute) and Courtney did actually get a letter from a pen pal! She came in from the mailbox a little surprised to say the least! I’m believing the same for today. I can’t wait to see what the day brings!

O.K., I mentioned something new….as you know, a couple of weeks back, I made a wreath for my wall with honeysuckle vines. It’s all dried out now and I’m getting lots of compliments on it so I decided that I wanted to make another. I went out to gather my honeysuckle and realized that we were disturbing a little bird sitting on her nest. We decided to leave her alone for now and opt for using privet limbs instead. Still very flexible, definitely longer, I was unsure of how strong they would be for weaving.

I brought them into the house, stripped the leaves, boiled them for two hours. The first thing that I noticed was that the bark is much harder to strip but overall the limbs seem to weave in just about the same manner. They are definitely thicker than honeysuckle so you have to be careful not to over bulk your project in one area, but other than that they seem to be O.K. I finished another wreath, this time for my front door, and started a basket. It’s looking pretty nice so far, I’ll post a picture of this too, when it’s finished drying.

I have been asked why I would spend so much of my time working on projects of this nature. I would have to say that as the manager of my home, I believe that it is my responsibility, and honor, to create the best home for my family that I possibly can. This means many things but among those are to make the most with what I have. I have to go about my daily tasks with the understanding that it is within these walls the foundations of my children’s lives will be built. I must also realize it is my place to bring my husband good (see Proverbs 31:12). I should be actively working to further his projects, praying for him consistently, and making the most of the resources he works so hard to provide for our family.

With all of that said, this is an excerpt from one of the pet projects that I hope to have completed and ready for distribution before the end of the summer. It is from “The Frugal Housewife”:

“The true economy of housekeeping is simply the art of gathering up all the fragments, so that nothing be lost. I mean fragments of time, as well as materials. Nothing should be thrown away so long as it is possible to make any use of it, however trifling that use may be; and whatever be the size of a family, every member should be employed either in earning or saving money.”

This is off topic, but I would also like to mention that after speaking to our business mentor, he suggested that we ask others around us for referrals for sales people. He was really excited about our business model and said that it would be an awesome opportunity for someone in sales who “is looking for something better”. If you know someone who would be a fit, please ask them to give us a call!

Prayer Requests:

Stacy McDonald of Homeschooling Today magazine. She’s been battling an infection on her foot that had the potential for becoming quite serious. Please pray for her continued recovery.

Jacob Greenlaw is having minor surgery on his mouth this morning.

Kimberly Greenlaw who is still not feeling totally well these days.

I’ve been battling a slight virus over the last few days…please pray for a quick healing process for me.

My Grandmother goes for her cast today (I originally thought it was yesterday). My uncle will be taking her to live with him following this appointment. I’m sure that it will be a difficult transition for her to live with him at first but in the long run, it’s going to be better off for her, I’m sure.

Today, I’m Thankful For:

So many wonderful things happening yesterday.

Ben is starting to go potty all by himself!

The items that I’m able to create at low or no cost to our family.

Time spent playing with my precious Emma this morning before others were awake in my home.

The progress that we’re making in training our parakeet.

Tracy’s Task:

Yesterday, you filled in the gifts that you would like to make for others for the holidays…today, you are going to start thinking toward creating a holiday planner. This will be the first addition. I always keep mine in a folder that has the three prongs in the middle. That allows me the pockets on the front and back to store recipes and receipts and I can add or take away paper as I would like. So girls, find your folder or binder and lets work on planning for upcoming holidays so that it doesn’t pile up on us last minute!

What I’m Learning:

Little Jiffy Greenhouse with tiny growing plants labeled with paper labels left in the rain over the weekend (the plants are getting too big to keep the lid on now)….bad thing. Now we are left with a tray full of little vines…the only two that we can really identify are the lavender and tomatoes….we’re going to have more fun than I originally thought with our gardening this year. Our first objective will be to correctly identify the growing plants! UGH!

Today’s Scripture Meditation:

2 Chr 7:14
“…if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
(NIV)

Mother’s Day

Whew! What a week we’ve had!

It seems like the last several days have been a whirlwind of activity, I can’t wait to see what this week brings.

Mother’s Day was wonderful in my home. My children know that I watch the news every morning while breakfast is being made and went to great length to record the most perfect news cast starring all of my favorite news people….them! It was even complete with homemade commercials. Joshua did all of the editing and even composed the background music for the feature. I am so impressed! Blown away is more like it! They spent a lot of time and effort on this project…I am very blessed indeed!

Pictured today is one of the Mother’s Day gifts that I gave to my Mom. This is a rice sock…she loved the first one that we gave her. You can pop these into the microwave for a couple of minutes and they make great hot packs. Mama has always used hers to heat the bottom of her bed. This time, I also made a casing for it so it could be washed. I’m hoping to turn out several more of these for Christmas presents this year!

Along those lines, I also made for her a Victorian Soap Sack. I’m going to request permission for the pattern today and try and post it here tomorrow with a link to the site location so that if you are interested, you can knit your own!

Prayer Requests:

The Lawrence’s daughter fell and broke her ankle on Thursday. She has had such a tough year. Please pray for her …she really needs restoration for her body.

I received this prayer request from Tanya… “please pray for my Uncle Cecil, his wife Faye(mom’s sister), his dd CJ, his mom, Faye’s dd Chelle….Cecil was in a bike crash today. He is in ICU at UAB…on a vent.” Things are so rough for this family right now. Please pray for all involved. This bike accident was really serious.

My Grandmother fell yesterday (Mother’s Day), and broke her foot. This is a major issue for my family right now as my Grandmother could barely walk as it was. I’m hoping that my family can re-group today and figure out a plan for her care.

Our week…we’ve got so much that needs to be done. It seems like Paul’s business is beginning to pick up momentum…we just don’t want to get ran over by it! : )

Today, I’m Thankful For:

My Grandmother’s fall not being more serious!

My sweet children. I feel so blessed to be loved my such special people in this world.

The time that I got to spend with my Mom yesterday.

My Mom winning 1st prize in the art show that she entered on Saturday!

The tablecloths that I found on clearance at Walmart a couple of weeks ago. I kept one whole for the table and so far, I’ve been able to cut over 40 matching cloth napkins out of the others!

—I can’t remember if I mentioned this last week or not. I found tablecloths on clearance at Walmart for $1.00 a piece! As many of you know, we are trying to cut every penny that we can out of our grocery budget so the switch to cloth napkins was one of our first thoughts. This sale allowed me to get really nice fabric for them for less than I would have been able to purchase them in the fabric department! God is so good!

Tracy’s Task:

Today, believe it or not, I’m starting my Christmas list. On most years, I’m almost complete with my Christmas purchases by October. This has not been the case in the last couple of years because we’ve financially been unable to do so, but take it from me…it’s so much less holiday stress if you can get it done early. At this point, I’m going to focus on my homemade gifts. I would like to have the list complete of all the homemade gifts that I need to have made for this year so that I can start watching for supply sales.

What I’m Learning:

I completed my first braided rug this last week! I was so excited. My girls are trying to work on redecorating their bedroom and this was a great addition.

I am surprised by nothing. I’ve now potty trained 6 children. Why is it on the seventh, I must face an even newer challenge? Many of you know that I detest potty training but as if that is not enough, little Benjamin, now having grasped the concept of control when using the restroom has been caught more than once, more than twice, yes, more than three times this week pulling down his drawers WHEREVER he is and just going. It doesn’t matter what room, what’s in front of him or who he is sharing a room with. He then comes to me wanting to know if he can have a sticker since he “went potty”. Hmmmmmm, I think we’ve missed a step somewhere.

Today’s Scripture Meditation:

Ps 119:133-135
“Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me. Redeem me from the oppression of men, that I may obey your precepts. Make your face shine upon your servant and teach me your decrees.”
(NIV
