Teach Your Child to Read– Phonics/Reading

We are asked about the curriculum we use quite often.

Honestly, most things change from year to year, but we have managed to find a few “keepers”.

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons remains our main phonics curriculum.

Years ago, when we first started to think about homeschooling our children, this was suggested by my uncle (a veteran homeschooler). It was the first homeschool book we ever purchased.

We’ve used it for all of our children who are now reading (that would be seven, now finished). Jon and Emma are currently working through the book.

I’ll admit feeling frustrated when we first used this book. I didn’t feel like we were making good progress — but I decided to stick with it and over the years, it has proven itself again and again.

Through the years, we’ve developed a system of sorts, for using this book. I’m happy to share these ideas with you!

We don’t do any of the handwriting, rhyming, or touching assignments. I’m sure they are useful for some, but we just decided they didn’t really add anything substantial toward our goal of reading, so we just don’t do them.

Second, I try to work our way through all the letters and sounds in each lesson before we work on the words.

I know this is not how they have each lesson organized, but it works well for us.

To be more detailed, I actually ask my children to name all the letters first, and then we go back through the lesson for them to tell me the sound each letter makes.

This gives me a chance to remind them of long and short sounds for each letter.

Also, because I have them naming each letter (something the book doesn’t tell me to do), I’ve avoided the problem of having worked my way almost all the way through the book before my child can name each letter.

Some additional little details– we realized early on that this book was being used so much, it was falling apart.

When we purchased our second copy, I went ahead and ripped all the pages from the book and placed them into page protectors. Now our book is housed in a heavy binder (which after so much use is now also beginning to fall apart– anyone know where to find a heavy duty binder??).

We keep each child’s place with a bookmark I’ve made for that child. I just slide it into the page protector where I last left off with our lesson.

This seems insignificant to me, but our children LOVE their bookmarks. Most have them tucked away in their keepsake boxes.

It’s a BIG deal in our home when you are old enough for Mama to create your phonics bookmark.

The other thing I’ve done is initial and date each child’s progress through the book. It’s a growth chart, of sorts. I had never really thought about this being special until Courtney was glancing through it’s pages a couple of weeks ago, and mentioned how nice it was to see each of their initials and the date beside the lessons.

Admittedly, I’ve not been as consistent with initialing as I should have– now that I know it’s meaningful to them, I’ll definitely make more of an effort.

If you are using this curriculum, or think you might, OR if you have some ideas for making school memorable and fun, I would love to hear your ideas!

Growth Chart

I’m really sorry these pictures are so bad!

This room isn’t the brightest and honestly, I’m still learning about this little gem of a camera my children purchased for me last Christmas.

I wanted to share one of my newest projects with you:

It’s inspired by this recreation of this Pottery Barn growth chart:

(I needed to replace mine after a little one decided to mark their height on my old chart.)

I’ve never been a fan of using the actual wall for our heights knowing that we would one day move (which we did a couple of years ago). Using a board of some sort allows for the board to move with you!

I was going to just use another white board, but I just couldn’t resist trying the PB inspired one instead.

So, here’s how I did it! I used a board from another really big project:

I rubbed it down with some stain. Then I chose a font I liked and printed off the numbers on my computer.

I cut them out and traced around them on to the board with a Sharpie marker, and colored them in completely. (You may have to do this twice!)

I gave it one coat of polyurethane and I was done!

It turned out really great! We mounted it in the family room. Our children are already walking up to measure themselves.

This is one more thing that I hope will bring them fond memories as adults!

Making Memories- Letters to Children

For some time, I’ve been writing letters to my children.

These aren’t really on anything specific, just random thoughts, memories, things I want to share with each child.

They each have baby books and I journal a lot- but these are more casual, I guess. Almost a conversation that I’m having with them at some future date.

At the moment, I’m writing on loose-leaf paper and storing them in a binder.

I’m looking for ideas here, my creative friends.

How can I preserve these properly?

I would like for them to look nice and stand the test of time.

This sounds like such a big project. In reality, it really doesn’t take but five minutes to write a letter. I’ve found I can squeeze in time while dinner is cooking, or while I’m waiting on a phone call.

It just doesn’t take that long….

Please leave a comment and share your ideas!

July 30, 2010

So while the older boys are planning their camp out in the backyard, it’s Friday night and the littles are planning a camp out of their own in the library floor:

What is so magical about tent sheets and floor sleeping? I remember loving it when I was younger too…I just don’t think my back loves it too much these days.

Well, what’s new around here.

Let’s see.

Bernie, the second of our two turkeys (Burt and Ernie–we weren’t sure which had died so we combined their names), was found dead this morning.

I’m not sure what to think- we’re wondering if it’s the food they were eating. We were just preparing to butcher this guy– it was a shock to see it on the ground this morning.

I’m not sure I’m settling into this part of homesteading, I think I may be too attached. It sounds strange I’m sure, but there is just something sweet about a turkey who tags along at your side in the morning when you are walking the garden.

They really are like a pet!

I’ve been spending my time planning various projects and sewing.

I have felt such a draw lately to really organize our scrapbooks, photos, and mementos. That’s a big job!!

Before, I didn’t have a lot of space to work. Now, I certainly have more space but the amount that I have to organize seems a bit overwhelming.

I have decided to use a digital scrapbooking service for my digital prints rather than having them printed and then placing them in albums.

Of course, this dial-up connection can make that on a little challenging. We’re still trying to figure out some creative ways around that obstacle.

…and just because, this is the misc. box of stuff that we found in the house and thought we would keep but haven’t found a place for just yet.

I just thought I would share…imagine 9,000 square feet of this, *smile*

Prayer Requests

  • My feet. My feet. My feet.

  • My two brave men sleeping in the backyard this evening

Today I’m Thankful For

  • Beautiful Weather

  • A mirror that I love…I just can’t decide where I want to hang it- on the porch, maybe?

  • An understanding (*VERY* understanding) walking partner
  • Joshua’s time away to help friends build their chicken coops
  • Dinner out with my dearest, Paul

Today’s Scripture Meditation

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”- Matthew 5:14,16

With my love,

Just an Update

We’ve unpacked our boxes- each and every one!

It’s something I never thought would happen- I’m so glad it’s done!

At this point, we’re organizing our school day, creating laundry routines, and refocusing efforts on making things generally more efficient.

In this area, I imagine I’ll be spending more time. These details require tweaking, as I’m sure you know.

So, here are some things I’m looking at- (I’ll share more details in the coming weeks).

FotoFusion isn’t working so well with our internet connection- we’re going to have to figure out a way around this!!

I’m very thankful for space to try a version of this with my family!

Meredith’s Birthday

A whole first year already….

Meredith’s first baby prints on the birthday tablecloth–

She loved feeling the paint between her toes!

My Mom made her the sweetest bear:

She loves it and has been taking it pretty much everywhere since!

Mom also crocheted a doll…with yellow hair.

She made Meredith a matching hat and wig!! We laughed and laughed!!

The panda cake is a tradition in my family. Each of our babies have gotten the bear cake on their first birthday.
