This Week on Pinterest- Wreath and Fall “L”

I’m staying on top of these Pinterest projects.

I fear having the ideas build up and sit there useless, so we’re trying to pick a few projects to try each week, (if time allows, more).

This last week, we made the fall wreath for our door. I used the idea I found here.

Our wreath was made from styrofoam (speaking of which, have you seen the idea of cutting the wreath form in half to get two?? Great idea!), and those Dollar Tree pumpkins I’ve mentioned before. We did wash them down with diluted brown paint.

I also used the Dollar Tree moss. I priced sheet moss, but I might just as well have bought a completed wreath for what they wanted for sheet moss at the hobby store– and that was just for one package! It would have taken several to complete the entire wreath.

I sprayed the entire wreath down with spray adhesive to adhere the moss to the wreath form.

Honestly, I love the way this looks, but the moss has been a headache. The moss is just not sticking well to the form.

Oh well. I’m guessing I can always stick it around the houseplants here when we’re done (if it lasts that long!).

I also used Dollar Tree leaves to cover a cardboard “L” for the mirror in our living room. The idea was found here.

This was a quick project, and I think it turned out cute. I do wish I had left some of the leaf tips un-glued. I just like the look her letter better than this one, but it was just a first try.

By the way, I used hot glue instead of spray adhesive (I avoid it as much as possible!).

Window Whimsy

I’m trying to pay a lot more attention to details in my home these days.

It’s the little things that my children and husband will remember when they are away, and the little things that make me smile when I think of home.

I started telling Courtney I wanted to hang Christmas lights in my bedroom about a year ago and last week, I finally did it!

This second picture is with the lights out. It’s not nearly this bright in my actual room. It just adds a nice glow ….it’s whimsical, soft, and romantic.

New Sparkle Shoes- Thrifted Finds

Many of you know Emma has had a long-time love for those Wizard of Oz red sparkle shoes.

We found her a pair a couple of years ago. Of course, she’s grown and they have not. She wore them proudly, pretty much everywhere we went for that period of time.

She’s missed them. I’ve looked for a replacement and finally found one:

They were new, with tags(!), at the local thrift store!!

While we were there, Courtney and I also happened upon a light fixture (also with tags from a local lighting store!). For $6 we couldn’t resist.

We had a little help from Jacob–

and now we have this:

Wow! It made such a nice difference outside of our door.

I wish I had taken a “before” picure. We had a small light- this is so much better.

It’s amazing what you can find at those thrift stores!

This Week on Pinterest– Pumpkin Pictures (October 2, 2012)

We don’t celebrate Halloween, but I’m a sucker for fall decorations!

About a year ago, we screwed little cup hooks into each of the bedroom doors.

They are specifically for hanging little seasonal decorations. Just something to add a warm touch to the hall. :)

In any case, I loved this idea on Pinterest for fall. (Don’t you just love Pinterest?!)

With our own spin, I decided to re-create them for our home. (Sorry I don’t have step-by-step pictures, but you’ll probably get the idea!)

We bought frames from the Dollar Tree and gave them a quick spray with Krylon’s Glitter Blast. (A quick note, this spray can be a little difficult when you first use it– just spray a small piece of cardboard for a minute to get the paint started!)

We took the glass out of the frame and covered the back with scrapbooking paper (a different color for each door).

I glued half of a styrofoam pumpkin (these are in the floral section) that I had rubbed down in brown paint.

When you buy them they are a really bright, sort of tacky orange. Rubbing them down with paint really helps make them look a little more realistic (about as much as half of a styrofoam pumpkin can!).

They can be cut easily with a utility knife.

Please do keep them away from any toddlers you may have:

We have been trying so many of these projects lately. I can’t wait to share more! I actually started a Pinterest board called “ideas we’ve tried” for all the things we’ve been making.

POTD- April 26, 2012

We’ve been busy painting and working around our home (maybe early nesting, *smile*). This is a little project I’ve slipped in between coats of drywall mud, and floor stain.

We’re replacing all the plastic outlet and switch plate covers with oak:

We bought them at the hardware store (I was surprised how inexpensive they were!), and applied a coat of Krylon’s Dover White. They are SO nice! It’s amazing how such small changes can make such a large difference.

Paul has now finished his degree. He’s still waiting to graduate, but now, we’re ordering graduation announcements and enjoying the extra time with him.

While he’s had a little more free time, he’s been working on my pantry. I’m SO very excited! We’ve needed one for a long time.

He and Jacob have worked most of the afternoon, and will work some tomorrow, as well.

Jacob had already installed flooring in this room:

This is the same “plywood to plank” flooring we’ve been installing through the rest of our home. He completed this floor by himself! (Please excuse the mess….it’s an active construction site at the moment.)

Growth Chart

I’m really sorry these pictures are so bad!

This room isn’t the brightest and honestly, I’m still learning about this little gem of a camera my children purchased for me last Christmas.

I wanted to share one of my newest projects with you:

It’s inspired by this recreation of this Pottery Barn growth chart:

(I needed to replace mine after a little one decided to mark their height on my old chart.)

I’ve never been a fan of using the actual wall for our heights knowing that we would one day move (which we did a couple of years ago). Using a board of some sort allows for the board to move with you!

I was going to just use another white board, but I just couldn’t resist trying the PB inspired one instead.

So, here’s how I did it! I used a board from another really big project:

I rubbed it down with some stain. Then I chose a font I liked and printed off the numbers on my computer.

I cut them out and traced around them on to the board with a Sharpie marker, and colored them in completely. (You may have to do this twice!)

I gave it one coat of polyurethane and I was done!

It turned out really great! We mounted it in the family room. Our children are already walking up to measure themselves.

This is one more thing that I hope will bring them fond memories as adults!
