Laundry Detergent

Tracy / February 13, 2013

Y’all know I’m a GAIN girl, right?

I love the fresh scent…it always smells fresh like spring, even in the dead of winter (though who can tell, this year?).

The price is what I just can’t get past. It’s expensive laundering clothes for this family. I’m always on the lookout for a better deal.

A while back, I found this recipe and decided to give it a try (Jillee’s site is packed full of fantastic homemade cleaning products!). I did decide to double the ingredients as I read through the comments, and I may
decide at some point to try a different soap.

I didn’t really want to like it, but I do. It works perfectly and we’ve now been using it for a couple of months for a cost that is pennies on the dollar compared to the name brand detergent I was using.

Jess and I mixed this soap up a few nights back. This amount should last at least a couple of months! 🙂

Sorry, GAIN. I need to step away for now (maybe for good!).

  1. Interesting to know. I will let you be the guinea pig for me, haha. I used the grated soap version that the site talks about and the grating didn’t bother me so much, it just didn’t clean well. Our water is very hard and it’s just hard to find a good homemade, so let me know.

  2. OK, we’ve made the grated soap kind for YEARS – first with Fels Naptha, then with Zote, then back to Fels Naptha b/c the Zote smell I could not abide. (though I sure did like the plate full of pink grated soap!) We have terrible water so my goal is usually just “clean” – never mind faded, since they all get rust colored anyway ;( I love the smell of Dawn & do use it *straight* as a de-greaser. Since at least 1 comment mentioned this: do *you* notice any excessive fading or other problems? We may be trying this when next we need detergent …. I do love that color … =)

  3. I actually have been using it for a couple of months and haven’t really noticed any fading more than usual. …I’ll let you know as I continue to try it out!

  4. I’ve made laundry detergent before using (most likely) the same recipe as Carrie. I prefer liquid soap, so I did the heated version, then adding water to fill a 5 gallon bucket & some tea tree oil. Brian didn’t care for it, so after it was used up, I went back to the Amway SA8. I still can’t justify the cost, so I keep returning to my Arm & Hammer.

I’m going to try your new recipe 🙂 Making 1 gallon at a time is enticing to me. I actually keep a small bottle of Dawn and a toothbrush in the laundry room – it works great on stains, especially grease!
