It’s happened again.

Valentine’s morning found us up to the realization that the same two dogs that killed our last flock of birds, had visited once again and killed all but two of our existing adult flock of chickens.

We have one hen and one guinea left. Our dear friends and neighbors also lost five of their chickens, including their rooster.

Thankfully, we still have the chicks we just ordered but we were hoping to supplement the existing eggs we would have- not for this to be all we own.

Last time, our chickens were kept in triangles we could rotate through the pasture area of our land so they would always have a fresh source of grass and bugs. We didn’t realize how easy it would be for the dogs to rip through these cages. Our chickens really didn’t have a chance.

This time, we had the chickens in wood/chicken wire pens INSIDE of a larger perimeter fence made of hog wire.

It’s obvious the dogs jumped the outer fence this last time and then ripped into the inner cages.

We’re of course, really upset….we still don’t know who owns these dogs- and haven’t seen them again since that night.

….For now, we’re working on new cages again. We knew what we had was not working. This whole homesteading experience has truly been one big adventure in trial and error.

For a bigger blow, our sweet kitty, Josie, hasn’t been seen since this night either. Jessica, especially, is very upset. We’re hoping maybe she was scared and will return home after a few days. She’s been a very good cat and is terribly missed in our home.

Prayer Requests

I have an unspoken request for a very dear friend this morning. It’s weighed heavily on my heart this week. Though I don’t want to mention her name this morning, the Lord knows. Please remember her in your prayer.

Today I’m Thankful For

  • Beautiful, beautiful weather this week. I find myself finding reasons to be outside.
  • A lovely sunrise above the office window as I work this morning
  • Early morning, quiet hours
  • Hot cocoa, delivered by Courtney…and the smell of bacon cooking in the kitchen
  • Hubby that works hard to provide for our family

Today’s Scripture Meditation

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” – Romans 8:35,37

With my love,

  1. I am so sorry to hear about the chickens and hope the kitty finds its way back home soon.

It has been very hard for me also to stay inside/at home with this beautiful weather. 🙂
